The Dominican Republic and Dominica are NOT one in the same. The Dominican Republic is on the island of Hispanola and is right next to Haiti. Dominica is a separate Caribbean island/country that was devastated by the wrath of tropical storm Erika on August 27th. Dominica now lies tattered but unbowed, and needs your help. The storm caused severe flooding and mudslides and killed at least 20 people. More than 50 people are still missing. A group of Dominican-Americans have now joined forces in an effort to help their native land, while working with the government to help rebuild shattered communities. On today’s show we’ll talk with Pastor Cuthbert Joseph, the official spokesperson for Boston for Dominica who will discuss what happened last month and how we can help. It’s a show where your compassion will be appreciated and welcomed.
About Dominica and How You Can Help
The Commonwealth of Dominica had a population of 72,301 at the 2014 Census. The capital is Roseau, located on the leeward side of the island. Dominica was first discovered by the Spanish, then colonized by the French and British before finally obtaining independence in 1978. Dominica has been nicknamed the "Nature Isle of the Caribbean" for its unspoiled natural beauty. It is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles, still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity, as evidenced by the world's second-largest hot spring, Boiling Lake. The island features lush mountainous rainforests, and is the home of many rare plants, animals, and bird species. There are xeric areas in some of the western coastal regions, but heavy rainfall occurs inland. The island has 365 rivers. The Sisserou parrot(also known as the imperial amazon), is found only on Dominica and is the island's national bird. It is featured on the national flag. Dominica's economy is heavily dependent on tourism and agriculture. Christopher Columbus named the island after the day of the week on which he spotted it: Sunday (dies Dominica in Latin), 3 November 1493. In the hundred years following, Dominica remained isolated. It was inhabited by the Kalinago people (Island Caribs), and as European powers entered the region, more refugees settled there after being driven from surrounding islands, eventually driving the Spanish settlers away. France had a colony on Dominica for several years, importing African slaves to work on plantations, at which time the Antillean Creole language developed. France formally ceded possession of Dominica to Great Britain in 1763. Great Britain established a small colony on the island in 1805. Britain abolished slavery throughout the British Empire in 1834. By 1838, Dominica became the first British Caribbean colony to have a legislature controlled by an ethnic African majority. In 1896, the United Kingdom took governmental control of Dominica, turning it into a Crown colony. More than half a century later, from 1958 to 1962, Dominica became a province of the short-lived West Indies Federation. On 3 November 1978, Dominica became an independent nation and almost immediately, a republic, as the Queen is not the head of state. By Carole Copeland Thomas, MBA, CDMP, CITM I am pleased to announce that on Sunday August 30, 2015 in Denver, Colorado I graduated from the International Guide Academy as a Certified International Tour Manager designation: CITM. A total of 12 students from various backgrounds graduated, representing the United States, Canada and Germany. It was an intense nine day non-stop experience.
The big surprise was that I TIED for Number One, along with classmate Amanda Larson of Colorado. She is pictured to my left with the black shirt. It was a grueling but exhilarating week of travel and tourism terminology, role plays, group exercises, written exams and formal presentations. The intensive program included: Travel Industry Terminology, Tour Operators Methods, Industry Trends, Job Description Tour Manager/Tour Director; Pre-tour Departure Preparations; Paperwork and Expense Accounting: Public Speaking, Airline and Airport Procedures, Baggage Handling and Control; Client Welcome Preparation and Delivery: Cultural Practices: How to Research: Leisure Days on Tour: City Tours; Motorcoach Travel; Destination Itinerary Planning: Motorcoach Driver and Teamwork: Optional Excursions: Group Psychology: Passenger Emergencies and Industry Networking. This new achievement will advance my work in the travel and tourism industry. I am already leading worldwide tours, with the next one scheduled for February 2016 to India (Click Here For Details). I will also pursue tour management opportunities with other companies who engage the services of professional tour directors for group tours run by their organizations. At 62 years old, I proved to myself that learning is still an important part of who I am as a diversity professional and global thought learner. I look forward to future travel adventures all over the world, thanks to my new training through IGA. Why A Tour Manager, Carole?? This is more of a line extension for my business. I started leading tours two years ago with my first Caribbean Cruise. Now trips to India. The course helped me to better understand the industry while pursuing independent contracting opportunities with tour companies. You know the ones with the brochure of tours where you can travel anywhere in the world. Now I can lead those tours anywhere…thanks to the training I received. And be paid, too! Tour Operators hire tour managers like me to lead groups all over the world. I hope to begin sometime in 2016. About IGA The International Guide Academy, Inc. of Denver, Colorado, USA is the most trusted worldwide recognized international training center specializing in training and certifying professional International Tour Directors and Tour Guides. The program was started in 1973 in Australia, and then the programs were conducted in Hong Kong and later in London. The company has been in the USA since 1988 and in 2007 expanded to holding courses in Mexico. In 2009, an International Tour Director certification program was conducted while at sea aboard the Norwegian Spirit. In 2010 the first program in Canada was held in Ottawa and our second program at sea aboard the Norwegian Dawn. IGA continues its program availability, with courses in Denver, CO and Ft. Lauderdale, FL USA as well as aboard the Norwegian Dawn for a 15 day Caribbean cruise and training. IGA is one of four schools of its kind in the world. Log Onto: www.blogtalkradio.com/globalcarole Listen LIVE or Download Anytime ======================== Last week we traced the history of the African Methodist Episcopal Church from its origins in 1787 to how it has expanded into the church of today. In light of the tragic events that shocked the nation when a gunman killed nine people attending Bible study at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, the connections within the denomination are personal and deeply rooted for me. On today’s show I will go back and trace my AME roots that originate from the mid 1800s and share my American story so intertwined with our cultural past. From Georgia to Baltimore to the Midwest, the East Coast and around the United States, my family represents the essence of the AME Church. Faith, Education, Heritage and Family Reunions are the core ingredients that make my family so special to me. I will also be joined by cousins Theresa Johnson and Keith Williams who will share their knowledge on how our Gaines Family Reunion started back in the 1980s. The legacy of the Gaines/Charleston/Bachelor families is the legacy of family ties embedded in the AME Church. More Details About My Family: My grandfather, Rev. James A. Charleston built the present site of St. Paul AME -Detroit and paid for it before dying in the pulpit in June 1961. Rev. Charleston’s mother, Sarah Gaines Charleston was the wife of an AME minister and was the niece of Bishop Wesley John Gaines. Bishop Gaines was one of the founders of Morris Brown College (my grandmother’s alma mater). He also wrote 2-3 books before his death. Rev. Charleston’s brother, Dr. Samuel P. Charleston was a celebrated principal of the segregated Carver High School in Columbus, Georgia and a lifelong AME. When he died at the age of 95 in 1999, the city designated him one of the top 100 citizens of the 20th Century. Bishop Wesley John Gaines’ nephew was Bishop Abraham Lincoln Gaines. The Gaines Family in Baltimore were closely linked to Thurgood Marshall’s family and Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie’s Family. My cousin, Josephine Gaines, just died in July (right before our family reunion) at the age of 86. She as the last living grandchild of Bishop Abraham Lincoln Gaines. We have an extensive family tree that has been meticulously researched by my cousin Clarence Gaines in Chicago. Another ancestor, Rev. William Gaines, was part of a ministerial delegation during important meeting with Major General William Tecumseh Sherman in Savannah, Georgia in January 12, 1865. Here is a link to the transcript of that meeting: http://www.civilwarhome.com/shermanandministers.htm My family is FILLED with AME Ministers!!! Here is an excerpt from the 1865 meeting describing my ancestor who attended: 6. William Gaines, aged forty-one years, born in Wills County, Ga.; slave "until the Union forces freed me;" owned by Robert Toombs, formerly U.S. Senator, and his brother, Gabriel Toombs; local preacher of the Methodist Episcopal Church (Andrew's Chapel); in the ministry sixteen years. ================ Radio Broadcast for More Information About The Gaines Family Reunion: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/globalcarole/2014/07/24/the-gaines-family-reunion-how-to-build-a-legacy-one-generation-at-a-time ======================== YOUR COMMENTS ARE WELCOME! Log Onto: www.blogtalkradio.com/globalcarole Listen LIVE or Download Anytime ======================== Imagine what courage it took for that band of Black brothers and sisters to get up and walk out of St George’s Methodist Episcopal Church in 1787. It took guts, bravery and wisdom, not knowing what would happen next. But their faith intervened, and from that day forward the Free African Society would plant roots into great denominations like mine, The African Methodist Episcopal Church…AME. I have been a member of the AME Church my entire life. My family’s heritage goes back 150 years in this church with two ancestral Bishops whose pictures hang on the wall of our Mother Bethel Church in Philadelphia. In light of the recent events at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina and the historic eulogy delivered by President Barack Obama, we’ll bring you the highlights of a church that dates back to the early years of the American journey. A Brief History Of The AME Church The AMEC grew out of the Free African Society (FAS) which Richard Allen, Absalom Jones, and others established in Philadelphia in 1787. When officials at St. George’s MEC pulled blacks off their knees while praying, FAS members discovered just how far American Methodists would go to enforce racial discrimination against African Americans. Hence, these members of St. George’s made plans to transform their mutual aid society into an African congregation. Although most wanted to affiliate with the Protestant Episcopal Church, Allen led a small group who resolved to remain Methodists. In 1794 Bethel AME was dedicated with Allen as pastor. To establish Bethel’s independence from interfering white Methodists, Allen, a former Delaware slave, successfully sued in the Pennsylvania courts in 1807 and 1815 for the right of his congregation to exist as an independent institution. Because black Methodists in other middle Atlantic communities encountered racism and desired religious autonomy, Allen called them to meet in Philadelphia to form a new Wesleyan denomination, the AME. While the AME is doctrinally Methodist, clergy, scholars, and lay persons have written important works which demonstrate the distinctive theology and praxis which have defined this Wesleyan body. Bishop Benjamin W. Arnett, in an address to the 1893 World’s Parliament of Religions, reminded the audience of the presence of blacks in the formation of Christianity. Bishop Benjamin T. Tanner wrote in 1895 in The Color of Solomon – What? that biblical scholars wrongly portrayed the son of David as a white man. In the post civil rights era theologians James H. Cone, Cecil W. Cone, and Jacqueline Grant who came out of the AME tradition critiqued Euro-centric Christianity and African American churches for their shortcomings in fully impacting the plight of those oppressed by racism, sexism, and economic disadvantage. Today, the African Methodist Episcopal Church has membership in twenty Episcopal Districts in thirty-nine countries on five continents. The work of the Church is administered by twenty-one active bishops, and nine General Officers who manage the departments of the Church. Source: Dennis C. Americans barely blinks when mosques are blown up in distant lands or Christians are burned alive as they huddle together seeking safety in war torn nations. Now in this country the carnage has moved from schools building to Bible study classes in the basement of historic Black southern churches. The Honorable Rev. Clementa Pinckney will be buried tomorrow and eulogized by President Barack Obama. The other eight victims will be buried in the days to come. The services will be huge and no doubt televised. The tears will flow and the ultimate question, “Why?” will be asked. And in the wake of last week’s massacre remains a demented 21 year old “soldier of death,” who still waves his Confederate flag in his twisted mind. White, young, hateful with a gun. A deadly combination. Today we will explore the challenges and opportunities that America faces as it wrestles with the contingency of dissonances that just cannot embrace a globally connected multicultural nation. And we will celebrate the Supreme Court’s ruling today that upholds the Affordable Care Act…otherwise known as Obamacare. ================================ The Names of the 9 Killed In Charleston, South Carolina on Wednesday Night June 17, 2015 (In the order of the the photo collage above. The innocent looking letter arrived from my doctor on April 11th. I quickly opened it, read through it and everything looked pretty normal. Test results … all negative. Except one. My Hemoglobin A1c was elevated. It is a blood test that is used to monitor the control of blood sugars. It indicated that I had type 2 diabetes. I had two choices. Do nothing and the insulin shots and medication would soon follow. Or IMMEDIATELY change my eating habits, exercise and permanently change my lifestyle. Listen to today’s show and find out what I did next. What is Type 2 Diabetes? Diabetes is a problem with your body that causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. This is also called hyperglycemia. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. If you have type 2 diabetes your body does not use insulin properly. This is called insulin resistance. At first, your pancreas makes extra insulin to make up for it. But, over time it isn't able to keep up and can't make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose at normal levels.
